We will be holding events -- temporarily -- at
MERCHANT SQUARE MALL 2nd floor 1901 S 12th St Allentown, PA 18103
Same club hours. But to end by 6 PM rather than 6:15 or 6:30 as we are used to doing...our registration cutoff will move back 15 minutes
Registration Noon to 1 PM Firm Rd 1 starts promptly at 1:15 PM Events end 6 PM Everyone out 6:15 PM
All players must wear a mask or face guard. No exceptions. One warning (yellow card). Second offense (red card) -- player must leave for the day. If you need a breather -- go to the restroom...or outside the building.
The mall is open 10 AM to 7 PM. There are many vendors -- check them out! There is an elevator for those who need it. For the elevator -- enter through the main mall entrance. For those who want an entrance right next to our space -- there is a side entrance near a stairway. Restrooms are right next to our space. We are sub-letting space from HARVEST RAIN FELLOWSHIP CHURCH.
All of our entry fees will go up $5 to pay for the space. No shared food. No coffee made on site. Bring your own snacks or drinks.
All of the club chess equipment is still stored at St. Luke's Church -- so bring your own chess set, chess board, chess clock.
The first meeting (Nov 7) is a 3-round G/40 Swiss. The 2020 Quad race will resume on Nov. 14.
9/30/20 The search for a temporary playing site continues. We have several options in the works. Our primary home (St. Luke's Church) is still cautious about using the main fellowship hall during the pandemic.
Also -- Pastor Lamb passed away last month. Chess club sent a $100 floral display and I was able to attend the 25-person-limited service early in September.
Our thoughts and prayers go to our St. Luke's Church partners. We have stressed to them that, as we look for a temporary playing site, St. Luke's Church remains our primary home.
9/30/20 October Quads -- delayed pending site issues
Note: I have decided that we must be able to run at least two more editions of the 2020 Quads -- or else the existing Quad Points Race will be called "as is" etc. Time is running short. More updates to follow.
9/30/20 September Quads -- Canceled
9/30/20 August Quads -- Canceled
7/10/20 Our church site has re-opened for church services. However, they have not yet re-opened the fellowship hall to outside groups. Church council meets on July 13 to discuss the revised "Social Distancing Guidelines" we have submitted as part of the process of asking for a firm date when chess club might resume.
July Quads are canceled.
When we have a firm re-opening date -- a new schedule will be posted. The first few events will be SWISSES so that players may play as few or many rounds as they wish.
7/10/20 Larry Noone remains club champion
5/6/20 Our church site has decided to remain closed until JUNE 1 -- therefore, chess club operations remain CLOSED until at least the first week of June. The May Second Saturday Quads are canceled.
Keep checking here for more updates -- or send email to firstname.lastname@example.org to be added to our weekly list.
5/6/20 Congratulations to DENNIS NEWHART for having his game included in GM Alburt's column in the May 2020 Chess Life. Dennis sent in his win from the 300th Second Saturday Quads last year. Check it out!
