Allentown chess lost more than just an active club player when David Elliott passed away in 2007 after a brief illness. A year later, it was only natural that David's over-the-board opponents would want to celebrate their chess friend with a memorial tournament.
A total of 31 players participated in the 2008 David Elliott Memorial. A special thank-you goes out to the Elliott family for their generous sponsorship (including a pizza lunch). Other financial assistance came from: Phil Rizzo, Greg Fink, Bill LeBoeuf, and others who made in-kind donations to the event.
The prize fund was $400 -- the winners were:
1st Jack Mongilutz (5 pts) $140 and the David Elliott trophy (see below)
2nd Joe Mucerino (4.5 pts) $60
3rd (tie) Tom Fang and Greg Nolan (3.5 pts) $25 each
Top 1600-1899/unrated Rahul Yukich (4 pts) $75
Top Under 1600 Laverne Gildner (3 pts) $75
Jon Kleinfeld worked the demo board for the hard-fought board one games at the David Elliott Memorial (9/27/08).
Jim Strobel shows us the true purpose of the event at the David Elliott Memorial (9/27/08).
Rahul Yukich bounced back from a round one upset to score four straight wins and grab the 1600-1899 class prize at the David Elliott Memorial (9/27/08). His luck must have rubbed off on Laverne Gildner (far left), who beat two 1700-players and took home the Under 1600 class prize.
Joe DeRaymond came out of chess retirement to play in the David Elliott Memorial (9/27/08). Joe had a couple of unfortunate battles with the clock, but it was good to see him back at the board.
Bob Walters took a break from his studies to play in the David Elliott Memorial (9/27/08). Bob promises to play more often -- we think it means he hates calculus more than he hates the Sicilian.
Top seed Greg Nolan spent the entire tournament on board one, but a fourth round draw with Joe Mucerino set up a must-win last round game with Jack Mongilutz at the David Elliott Memorial (9/27/08).
Persio Capellan renewed his USCF membership for the David Elliott Memorial (9/27/08).
And the Winner is....Jack Mongilutz!
Jack defeated Greg Nolan in the final round to take the Elliott Cup at the David Elliott Memorial (9/27/08)
